The Royal Society of Tasmania Medal
The Clive Lord Medal
and
The MR Banks Medal
The Royal Society of Tasmania Medal is awarded every four years to a scholar for substantial original research in any subject within the Society’s purview. A significant part of the research shall have been conducted while the recipient was a resident of Tasmania. The recipient must have been, in the view of Council, an active member of the Society for at least five years.
The awardee receives a medal and will be invited to deliver “The Royal Society of Tasmania Lecture” to the Society. The first award of The Royal Society of Tasmania medal was in 1927.
The Clive Lord Medal is awarded every three years to an outstanding scholar distinguished for research in Tasmanian science or Tasmanian history. The Award will alternate between the fields of science and history, unless particular circumstances dictate otherwise. In 2025, the Award is open to nominations in the fields of science.
The awardee receives a medal and will be invited to deliver “The Clive Lord Lecture” to the Society. If not a member of the Society, the awardee will be offered free membership for one year. The first award of the Clive Lord Medal was in 1938.

The MR Banks Medal is awarded every two years to a scholar of distinction in their mid-career in any field within the Society’s purview. Mid-career is defined as between eight and a maximum of 15 years or 15 equivalent full-time years post PhD graduation. The research is to have largely been carried out in Tasmania or under the aegis of a Tasmanian-based organisation.
The awardee receives a medal and will be invited to deliver the “MR Banks Lecture”.
