Preface to three palawa lectures

Papers & Reports

Summary

In February 2021, The Royal Society of Tasmania offered a formal Apology to Tasmanian Aboriginal people (Palawa) and committed to building a respectful and supportive relationship. As part of honouring that commitment, the Society has invited Tasmanian Aboriginal scholars and leaders to present lectures in the RST lecture program. The three lecture transcripts published in this volume of the Papers and Proceedings provide a range of Palawa perspectives on the progression towards establishing a Voice, treaty and truth-telling at the Tasmanian and national level.

The three Palawa lectures were delivered in the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre at the University of Tasmania, to a live and on-line audience and their recordings were made available soon after for public viewing on the Royal Society’s YouTube Channel

The speakers were Mr Rodney Gibbins, Mr Michael Mansell and Ms Kerry Sculthorpe.

Disclaimer: The Royal Society of Tasmania did not endorse a particular position with respect to the Voice referendum and the views and opinions expressed in the three lectures are those of the authors

Acknowledgement of Country

The Royal Society of Tasmania acknowledges, with deep respect, the traditional owners of this land, and the ongoing custodianship of the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. The Society pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that Tasmanian Aboriginal Peoples have survived severe and unjust impacts resulting from invasion and dispossession of their Country. As an institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, the Royal Society of Tasmania recognises Aboriginal cultural knowledge and practices and seeks to respect and honour these traditions and the deep understanding they represent.
