How to join

If you wish to become a member of the Society, please download and complete the relevant membership application form. Should you have any difficulty accessing the form or have questions about the process, you are welcome to contact the Society’s Membership Secretary.

The application form is suitable for:

  • Full Membership — for individuals who support the Society’s mission and wish to participate in its activities
  • Student Membership — for current students seeking to engage with the Society’s programs and benefits

Nominators and seconders

NOTE: is the below correct?

Any adult person may be nominated as an Ordinary Member of the Society. Such nomination shall be in writing and shall contain the full name, titles and address of the person nominated, and shall be signed by not fewer than two Honorary Life, Life, Ordinary, or Student Members and the person so nominated and shall be lodged with the Honorary Secretary.

Similarly, for Student Membership. A person who is certified as bona fide as at least a half-time student by an officer of a recognised educational institution may be nominated and elected as a Student Member. Such nomination shall be in writing and shall contain the full name, titles and address of the person nominated, and shall be signed by two Honorary Life, Life, Ordinary, or Student Members and the person so nominated, and shall be lodged with the Honorary Secretary.

Should you wish to join the Society and do not know a Fellow or a Full Member personally, please consider attending a face-to-face meeting of the Society, as listed on our Events pages, and meet or be introduced to any of the many Members and Fellows who attend these events.  Similarly, use our contact form here to reach out to our Membership Secretary for more assistance.

 

Preparing and submitting your application

To apply for membership, download the Membership Application Form. You can complete the form electronically using a program like Adobe Acrobat Reader or print it out to fill by hand. Once completed, submit the form via email to [email protected] or mail it to:

Applications are reviewed and approved at the next general meeting of the Society.

Membership Fees

The schedule of membership fees for 2025 is summarised in the table below. Fees differ depending on whether members choose to receive a printed copy of the Papers and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania.

Acknowledgement of Country

The Royal Society of Tasmania acknowledges, with deep respect, the traditional owners of this land, and the ongoing custodianship of the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. The Society pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that Tasmanian Aboriginal Peoples have survived severe and unjust impacts resulting from invasion and dispossession of their Country. As an institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, the Royal Society of Tasmania recognises Aboriginal cultural knowledge and practices and seeks to respect and honour these traditions and the deep understanding they represent.
