RST Apology to Tasmanian Aboriginal people 2021.
This public forum was held on Wednesday 29 April 2026, at 6pm in the Stanley Burbury Theatre at UTas in Sandy Bay.
It was jointly organized by the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and The Royal Society of Tasmania.
Tasmania’s coastal future is arriving faster than we think. Warming seas, shifting ecosystems, and pressure on fisheries and coastal communities are reshaping our island’s identity. The choices we make now will determine whether Tasmania adapts and thrives, or struggles in a rapidly changing ocean.
The future is already on our shores, and the conversation about what comes next has never been more urgent.
The forum was moderated by John Gunn (ATSE) and featured short presentations followed by a panel discussion and question-and-answer session.

The Royal Society of Tasmania acknowledges, with deep respect, the traditional owners of this land, and the ongoing custodianship of the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. The Society pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We acknowledge that Tasmanian Aboriginal Peoples have survived severe and unjust impacts resulting from invasion and dispossession of their Country. As an institution dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, the Royal Society of Tasmania recognises Aboriginal cultural knowledge and practices and seeks to respect and honour these traditions and the deep understanding they represent.

On 15 February 2021, the Royal Society of Tasmania offered a formal RST Apology to Tasmanian Aboriginal people 2021.
