Bursaries

Bursaries available for Tasmanian secondary school students

The bursaries are one way in which the Royal Society of Tasmania achieves the aim of advancing knowledge at the same time as supporting the youth of Tasmania.

Bursaries have, in the past, been offered in the fields of science, mathematics and engineering. In 2019 the bursary program was broadened to also support students selected through a competitive process for international events in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

The Royal Society offers 3 categories of bursaries for Tasmanian secondary/senior secondary students who have been selected to attend an event through a competitive process.

Type 1:  ANZAAS (Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) Bursary

To provide assistance to students towards the ex-travel amount for attendance at ANZAAS, and to provide support for students interested in being engaged in other Science activities.  Click here to visit the ANZAAS website.

Type 2:  Dr Peter Smith Bursary

To be applied towards providing travel assistance for Tasmanian Senior Secondary Science students selected to represent Australia in International Science and Mathematics competitions at the highest level, such as Olympiads.

Type 3: Royal Society of Tasmania Bursary

For Tasmanian secondary/senior secondary students who have been selected to represent Australia at an international or national event in science, mathematics, engineering, the arts, humanities or social sciences.  The scheme was initiated by the late Dr Peter Smith in the early part of 2000.
