Awarded to a scholar of great distinction in any field within the Society’s purview. The awardee will deliver the “RM Johnston Memorial Lecture”. If not a member of The Royal Society of Tasmania, the awardee will be offered free membership for one year.
Robert Mackenzie Johnston (1843-1918) was a statistician and scientist. He was born in Scotland and emigrated to Australia in 1870. Johnston had a keen interest in all branches of science, especially geology, but also music and education. Johnston served as Vice-President of the RST from 1897-1911 and from 1916-1917.
The RM Johnston Memorial Medal was established in 1920, and first awarded in 1923.
